About the Department

The Department of Botany was established in 2010 at MGV Arts, Science and Commerce College Surgana.The department has grown into a well-recognized Centre in tehsil for graduate studies in basic and applied botany. In fact, this is the only Botany Department in the Surgana tehsil. Some of the major areas of research in the department are: medicinal botany, pharmacognosy, mycology, evaluation and conservation of plant biodiversity, and nanobiotechnology. The department attracts students for undergraduate studies from within and outside the tehsil. In addition to teaching through modern techniques, seminars, workshops, invited lectures, field visits and botanical excursions are an integral part of academic programme of the department. Within the department, we offer a B.Sc.in Botany. Our strengths in research and teaching support our leadership and participation in interdisciplinary research including Chemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology.

To conduct innovative research, teaching and outreach on the patterns and processes of life with a focus on plants and their environments.

Mission

  • 1) To foster an environment of excellence by attracting and supporting the outstanding students, faculty and staff needed to sustain our vision.
  • 2) To apply conventional and modern tools to understand plant life, human resource development with hands on experience in the frontier areas of Botany.
  • 3) Establishment of linkages with National and International Institute for betterment of students of the Department.
  • Botanical Garden

    The Department also has the Botanical Garden. The botanical garden enriched with diverse plant groups such as angiosperms, gymnosperms, pteridophytes, bryophytes, some fungi and fresh water algae. This botanical garden is a shelter for more than 75 plant species and some endangered plants in the region and acts as centre for ex situ conservation of plants. The botanical garden, besides serving as the repository of the source material for botanical studies, is also geared to cater to the dire need of conserving and enriching plant bio-diversity through exchange of plant and seeds.
